Angeles Fiallo Montero
Training and Experience
Angeles was born in Argentina but trained and practiced in the UK for over 14 years. She undertook a Master’s degree on Dance Movement Psychotherapy at Canterbury Christ Church University and Dance Voice, UK. Angeles has a wide range of experience with children, adolescents and families, including learning and physical disability, mental health, youth offenders, challenging behaviour, being in care/history of adoption and complex needs. Angeles has worked as a Dance Movement Psychotherapist at the NHS CAMHS and learning disabilities team for 8 years. During this time, she ran a parent-child clinic which included Theraplay informed sessions. Angeles has also worked at numerous charities for children and adults and at schools for children with autism, facilitating both group and individual dance movement psychotherapy sessions. Her most recent jobs were at a therapy centre which specialises on intercultural, attachment and trauma work and an adoption centre for families.
Approach
Angeles trained mainly within a person centred approach, although in her practice, she uses an integrative approach, combining verbal therapy with creative, sand-tray, small world, body and movement based interventions. She also incorporates intercultural awareness, attachment and other psychotherapeutic approaches. Through body and movement work, help clients release energy, regulate emotions, and ground themselves. She strongly believes on building a safe and healthy therapeutic relationship and on enabling each individual to identify their own therapeutic needs. Whilst creative methods can offer a different perspective and an opportunity to explore difficulties in more depth or beyond words, she encourages individuals to make choices on the interventions used during their therapeutic journey.
Additionally, Angeles can offer a carer/parent-child approach based on the principles of Theraplay, which focuses on strengthening the carer-child bond through play and positive interactions. Moreover, being a foreigner and immigrant enabled her to support her clients in navigating the challenges of living in a different culture, understanding self-identity, and the complexities of being far from one's family and homeland. The sessions can be in English, Latin Spanish and (Brazilian) Portuguese. Angeles also knows Makaton sign language.
Philosophy
Angeles is very passionate about her work. Individuals who participated in her sessions have built self-confidence, worked on social skills, achieved positive outcomes, released tension and enhanced their well-being and interpersonal relationships. Moreover, Angeles believes everyone can dance, regardless of their abilities or experience and as part of her profession, she enables others to express themselves through dance, creativity, arts and play.
